After the storm clears, you go outside and walk around your car, shocked.

Some react to the shock by taking control of the situation. They try to fix the damage with a do-it-yourself kit. If you do a basic search online for a hail repair kit, you’ll find options that range in price from around $70 to $250. Some kits feature hammers, suction cups, glue, even dry ice.  More than a little intimidating, to be sure, but should you go for it?

After a disastrous hailstorm in Boston, Massachusetts, John Paul, the public affairs manager for AAA in southern New England, weighed in. His recommendation? Skip the kits and go with a professional.  “The hail dents tend to be a little harder. They have to be literally massaged from the inside to get the dent out. The people who are good at this are really good. When they’re done you can’t see anything.”

Another independent opinion is from Chris McKinnon, reporter at News 9 in Oklahoma City. He did some investigative reporting on DIY repair kits. After trying several products and techniques, he had no success in fixing the dents on his own.
